The Earth Navy, also known as His Majesty's Navy and the Royal Navy, is the naval warfare force of the Earth Kingdom which, together with the Earth Army, makes up the military of the Earth Kingdom. With 14 warships in active service, all stoneclads, the Earth Navy is the most powerful navy in the world and possesses the largest fleet by both number of ships and tonnage. The Earth Navy is responsible for defending the shores of the Earth Kingdom from all internal and external threats, protecting the shipping of the Earth Kingdom and her allies, and projecting the Kingdom's power beyond its borders. Beyond these traditional naval functions, the Earth Navy also operates the Earth King's yacht, the Andorra, and maintains an elite special forces unit, the Metalbender Marine Corps.
The Earth Navy is administratively organized into two fleets, the Home Fleet and Northern Fleet, each with its own distinct geographic area of operation. Like the Army, the Earth Navy answers directly to the Earth King and is not accountable to the civilian government of the Earth Kingdom. Due to this structure, the military has been accused by observers of having undue influence and power in the Earth Kingdom at the expense of the government and nobility.
Established in January 2021, the Earth Navy was the second navy to introduce stoneclads and the first all-stoneclad fleet in the world. The fleet quickly grew to include a variety of powerful warships that incorporate novel cutting-edge technologies such as armed airskiffs, ship-launched aircraft, turrets, wireless redstone, remote-controlled equipment and TNT cannons. Today, the Earth Navy is a modern blue-water navy with a presence in three seas.
History
The Earth Navy was officially established on 26 January 2021 when the first Earth Kingdom warship, the stoneclad destroyer ENS Omashu, was brought into service. Though an armed ship, the RES Ba Sing Se, had entered royal service earlier in the month, it was not considered a naval vessel and served with the Kingdom's merchant marine. In the subsequent months, two more destroyers, Gaoling and Ba Sing Se, joined the fleet, while the Ba Sing Se was decommissioned and donated to Andorra. During this time, the Navy also unveiled the aircraft carrier Kyoshi.
In July 2021, Kyoshi undertook the first military operation in the Earth Navy's history when its complement of aircraft struck Acacian League targets during the Unification of the Earth Kingdom. Five torpedo boats also joined the fleet, doubling the number of ships in the Navy.
Later in the month, several warships of the Earth Navy participated in the Mexican War, with naval fighters seeing combat against Mexican ground forces.
In December 2021, the wreck of the Andorran ship Andorra, the former Earth Kingdom wooden frigate which was critically damaged and abandoned during the Mexican War, was towed to Ba Sing Se, repaired and recommissioned as the royal yacht ENS Andorra.
In January 2022, the Earth Navy added a battlecruiser and four frigates and was split into two fleets with jurisdiction over separate seas. In April 2022, the Navy was further reorganized to create an autonomous squadron-sized station within each fleet after the addition of three new cruisers.
Organization
Fleets
Home Fleet
The Home Fleet of the Earth Navy is the older and larger of the two fleets with a primary area of operation covering the Central and Southern Seas, including the Grand Canal. It is headquartered at Fort Kyoshi, but maintains docks and other facilities at Ba Sing Se, the Canal Zone and Cranefish Town. The fleet is commanded by Vice Admiral Wong Seetai and comprises 1 aircraft carrier, 3 destroyers, 1 frigate and 5 torpedo boats. The Home Fleet also includes the autonomous Andorra Station, a squadron based out of Fort Andorra in the Free Territory that comprises 1 light cruiser and 1 frigate.
Northern Fleet
The Northern Fleet of the Earth Navy is the fleet with primary operational responsibility for the Western and Northern Seas, including the Northern Canal. It is headquartered at Fort Bosco but also maintains facilities at Peigong in the Northern Frontier Administration. The fleet is commanded by Vice Admiral Wing Anting and includes 1 battlecruiser and 2 frigates in its main battle squadron. A further torpedo boat is attached to Omashu Station, an autonomous squadron based out of Omashu with administrative ties to the fleet.
The Earth Navy maintains aerial warfare capabilities through its naval aviation branch which operates from the fleet's two aircraft-carrying warships, the aircraft carrier ENS Kyoshi and the battlecruiser ENS Freeport Bay, and three helicopter-carrying light cruisers. The fixed-wing aviation component is organized into two squadrons, all of which operate the F-1/NG Bosco Naval Interdictor. The squadrons are:
- No. 1 Naval (Fighter) Air Squadron, ENS Kyoshi, Home Fleet (3x F-1/NG)
- No. 2 Naval (Fighter) Air Squadron, ENS Kyoshi, Home Fleet (3x F-1/NG)
In addition to the aforementioned squadons, a variety of fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft embarked onboard surface combatant ships are attached directly to the fleet commands.
Metalbender Marine Corps
The Metalbender Marine Corps is the marine infantry branch of the Earth Navy and the elite special forces unit of the Earth Kingdom. Made up exclusively of metalbenders, the regiment-sized unit deploys with naval warships and receives special training for amphibious assault, naval boarding, infiltration and clandestine operations. Metalbender marines make use of metal cables and other advanced bending techniques for movement and combat, allowing them to act as a highly mobile and lethal light infantry unit. Members of the unit regularly embark on naval vessels to defend against enemy boarding and provide an anti-submarine capability.
The Metalbender Marine Corps' equivalent in the Earth Army is the Airborne Regiment.
Bases
The Earth Navy operates from a large number of installations of varying sizes and quality, including allied ports such as Freeport.
- Fort Kyoshi is the headquarters of both the Earth Navy as a whole and its Home Fleet. Located outside Ba Sing Se, the large island facility includes dockyards for the main combat squadron of the fleet, a military airstrip operated by the Earth Army, major support and logistical facilities for both the Army and Navy, and a dockyard for ship construction.
- Fort Bosco is the headquarters of the Northern Fleet. Located outside Peining, the coastal facility includes dockyards for the fleet's ships and some auxiliary buildings supporting fleet operations.
- The Canal Zone is a major secondary facility of the Home Fleet and the administrative seat of the Western Frontier Administration. The sprawling military facility surrounds the Grand Canal and includes four separate docking areas, a military airstrip operated by the Earth Army, a large swing bridge that doubles as a sea fort, a large number of auxiliary buildings, and various border fortifications and defences.
- Fort Andorra is an island fortress in Freeport Bay that serves as the home base for the Home Fleet's Andorra Station naval squadron and a replenishment site for other warships transiting through the region.
- Peigong is the administrative seat of the Northern Frontier Administration and hosts rudimentary docking facilities and auxiliary buildings for naval use.
The Earth Navy is also known to operate ships out of the grand and southern harbours of Ba Sing Se.
