The Fire Nation is a country. Located on the east of the plane, it is one of the largest and most populous states in the world. Home of firebending, it is renowned for the large size of its army and its martial prowess. It is also internationally renowned for its construction abilities, with the capital of Fenixholm widely applauded as a world wonder.

History

The Fire Nation was founded 23 December 2020 by Alweglim. From the outset, the state has been particularly isolated from the rest of the world, due to his decision to move eastwards rather than westwards as the majority of states had done. This isolation did not diminish the productive capacity of the Fire Nation, which strode ahead with many early achievements in the winter of 2020. These included the first to obtain enchanted items, the first to obtain netherite, and the only nation to kill the enderdragon.

While isolated from most of the world, the Fire Nation did have one neighbour in the Air Nation. Tensions were initially high, as the First Temple was burned down by the Fire Nation. This led to a brief cold war between the two, as the Air Nation exploded into action to defend itself against a Fire Nation attack they believed to be imminent. The Fire Nation noticed this and responded with similar buildup. The state of the Earth Commune was established as a Fire Nation vassal to provide a buffer state at this time. Tensions eased when High Wind Murpple and Firelord Alweglim negotiated a détente, clarifying that the Fire Nation did not wish to expand nor did the Air Nation intend to ever wage an offensive war.

Upon the easing of tensions with the Air Nation, a rapid diplomatic rapprochement began. Both states found themselves incentivised to collaborate, with the Air Nation acting as an intermediary to keep other powers out of the Fire Nation, guaranteed by Fire Nation military strength. Further collaboration resulted as the Zombie Crisis depopulating many Fire Nation villages, providing the Air Nation an opening to repopulate these villages via airship after the Kami Breakthrough. A formal alliance was proclaimed between the two states on 23 February 2021, which would later evolve into the Quadruple Alliance.

War of the Flowers

Main article: War of the Flowers

From 17 November to 5 December, the Fire Nation engaged in a war of expansion to its south against various Spirit Valley Tribes. While the war initially began as a war against the Othii following the death of Fire Nation scouts that entered the area from Askhamn, this soon expanded into a pan-tribal coalition to resist the Fire Nation due to their perception of being evil spirits. The Fire Nation engaged in two significant battles during this campaign, those being the Battle of Mount Alweglim and the Battle of Four Armies. The latter of these effectively ended the war, seeing the Othii broken and the Senerii controversially wiped out to a man after their leader refused exile or surrender. The Baron's Burn, referring to a campaign by Even Newer Mexico leader Baron Bigby Branson, would see the Carnii forced to submit by the liberal use of forest fires to clear land from raiding.

While the Fire Nation achieved all of its strategic goals in the war, having secured the sunflower plains in Othii territory, the pacification of the south, and the conversion of its inhabitants, the fallout was profound. In particular, the Water Tribe formally left the Quadruple Alliance upon hearing of the forced conversion of the tribes.

Geography

The Fire Nation's territory has expanded multiple times to meet the times. What territory they hold today is consistently temperate and densely wooded, with mountains to the north and south, as well as two coasts on the Eastern Sea and Spawn Lake. The land is also nourished by many rivers.

While the Fire Nation's core territory is this way, their many vassals extend the de facto boundary of the Fire Nation considerably. The Othii colony is surrounded by mountains but is famous for its rolling fields of sunflowers, responsible for drawing the Fire Nation's interest in the area to prompt the War of the Flowers. The Carnii colony is significantly wooded now, largely as a legacy of the Baron's Burn during the war - with so many towns obliterated by fire, nature has largely reclaimed the former settled areas. Kaerii remains a vassal but much more autonomous than their tribal brothers, having sided with the Fire Nation during the war. Crucially, they lie on the Atlas Sea and are thus the site of the Fire Nation's naval endeavours.

Government and politics

The Fire Nation is an absolute monarchy. The Firelord wields supreme executive power and can unilaterally set law and foreign policy. The kingdom also contains various noble houses, which swear loyalty to the Firelord in exchange for protection and the right to govern smaller territories and fiefdoms. Some examples of these include House Varni, House Rune, and the now-extinct House Karkken

The reasoning by which the monarchy is justified as adjusted over time. At the founding of the nation, the monarchy was justified as the Firelord was the most powerful firebender and therefore the strongest warrior. This was transformed upon the discovery of the Holy Sunflower and the resulting birth of the Church of Fire. The Firelord is charged with the defense of the Holy Sunflower and is thus picked by the All-Father in this regard.

What this means for the exact justification of the monarchy is still up for debate, as this theological charge is debatable in its scope. Some argue this makes the Fire Nation into something akin to a caliphate, where the Fire Nation's territory must only contain Flametouched and where there are Flametouched must also be the Fire Nation. As the Book of Fire calls for mass conversion and conquest of foreign peoples, this could have the worrying implication of the Fire Nation being obliged to conquer the entire plane. In particular, this would contradict the Fire Nation's existing policy wherein it has allied to nonbeliever nations. Others argue that the Firelord is simply charged as the temporal protector of the Flametouched people, and thus has a similar role to the Chieftain of the Water Tribe, as the sunflower makes analogous. This, however, raises the concern of those who may convert to the Flametouched faith outside of Fire Nation borders, as they would have split allegiances to their temporal leaders and their spiritual leader.

Economy

The Fire Nation's economy is known for its strong wealth and industry. This is caused by many factors. One of these is that, due to its remote location and high population to supply the army, there has never been a serious need to construct either a fleet for air or sea purposes. These resources were reallocated for other construction projects, which further improved the ability to gain resources later. Additionally, the use of firebending to smelt goods without the need for obtaining raw fuel has saved a great deal of time and space for mining.

Demographics

The Fire Nation has remained highly homogeneous for most of its history, with the Fire Nation people constituting a majorjty since the state was first founded. Notable ethnic and religious minorities have existed since this foundation too.

With the establishment and collapse of the Earth Commune, some earthbenders fled to the Fire Nation. The Zombie Crisis which caused this collapse also saw a massive depopulation of the Fire Nation's NPC villager population. This would only be corrected much later by foreign NPCs being bought and transported from the Air Nation.

On 15 June 2021, the Sun People fled the Fire Nation due to their beliefs being heretical to Church of Fire accounts. Arriving and settling in the Air Nation, this group are the first and only coordinated wave of emigration out of the Fire Nation into foreign lands.

Following the Mexican War, many refugees from Mexico travelled eastwards through the Fire Nation. While many of these travelled to form a new homeland in what is now the Third Mexican Empire, many would be resettled into the new territory of Even Newer Mexico.

With the conclusion of the War of the Flowers, many Fire Nation settlers entered the territory of the defeated tribes. While many of the tribal people's saw catastrophic casualties during the war, with the Senerii being wiped out entirely, there remains a population large enough for the sum of the tribes to constitute the largest ethnic minority of the Fire Nation. Many within these tribes also continue to follow the Cult of the Moon, despite intense pressure to convert to the Church of Fire, thus constituting the sole significant religious minority of the nation too.

Culture

In the early days of the Fire Nation the culture was very loosely defined, with architectural style varying from build to build. This changed with the establishment of Fenixholm as the capital of the Fire Nation, as it has dominated the culture of the Fire Nation ever since. The Church of Fire has also contributed towards a clear defined Fire Nation culture focused around their religious worship, and have been largely responsible for bringing Fire Nation culture to their vassals Othii, Carnii and Kaerii.
