The Khanate is a country on the Central Sea, with influence that extends to the far north and west. The territory is ruled by horse nomads, known as Khans, who are highly capable in chiblocking. The indisputable territory of the Khanate, or the Heartlands, is relatively small, but their area of influence, also known as the Grazing Lands, is far larger and contains 4 NPC villages.
History
The Khanate was founded on the 18th of July 2021. The Khan people were the second state to use Chiblocking alongside the Free Territory, but it would be an error to say that these two nations are particularly similar because of this. Unlike the urbanised and technologically developed Anarchists, the Khans are a nomadic people who govern a vast area known as the Grazing Lands from their core territory, known as the Heartlands. While the Grazing Lands is an equal to all other nations of the world, the Grazing Lands are a vast and highly diverse area consisting of multiple ethnicities including Desert NPCs, Acacians, and Khans.
Tensions in the Grazing Lands have been high for some time, due to the primarily extractive nature of the Great Khan's government. Villages and communities are allowed to govern mostly unaffected by the Khans, however they must send vast quantities of tribute to the Heartlands periodically. Additionally, little is present to stop the colonization of the area by Khan settlers. This tension came to a head on the 22nd of December 2021, as two separate Acacian revolts broke out.
The Brothers' War
Main article: The Brothers' War
Two kingdoms, led by brothers Abughr and Brahnir of the Nassid clan, simultaneously declared independence by refusing to pay tribute for their respective territories on the 22nd of December 2021. The Great Khan Didly's initial response was to demand the tribute be paid before initiating hostilities, which was refused. This lack of response formally began the war.
It should be noted that the brothers had a fierce rivalry and were not acting as agents towards one unified kingdom. Both claimed the title "King of Acacia", both saw each other's rule as illegitimate, and both felt the other to be ill-advised in their course of action. They did, however, retain a healthy respect for each other's intelligence and as siblings.
Abughr's kingdom was significantly larger than Brahnir's, consisting of the two vilages Yahmok and Dehna. While Abughr was the younger brother and thus lower in preference to inherit the clan's leadership, he was well-known for his martial prowess and high charisma. All too aware of the defeat inflicted on the Acacian rebels that had fought the Earth Kingdom (despite not themselves being Acacian), he promised a vast Acacian empire in order to create a state too powerful for the major bending powers to coerce. As a result of these aspects, many warriors and leaders of the Acacians flocked to his banner until he boasted an army some 10,000 strong. As part of his expansionary policy, these forces immediately organised to attack and destroy the Khan settlements, with the goal of pinning the Khan horde between his force and Brahnir's. This plan resulted in the Battle of the Yurts and the Battle of Dehna, in which Abughr's army was decisively surrounded and destroyed by the Great Khan. The former territory of Abughr's kingdom was then reorganised under direct administration by a noble Khan family, the Kero.
Brahnir's much smaller kingdom was eliminated at the Battle of Yurts-Dehna, although significant losses were inflicted on the Khans here by a far smaller Acacian force. This effectively ended the war and any immediate prospects of Acacian independence, securing the Khanate's territory once more.
Geography
The Khanate's territory is divided into two primary categories: the economically productive yet very small Heartlands, and the far larger and more populous Grazing Lands. The Heartlands represent the internationally recognised sovereign territory of the Khanate, while the Grazing Lands constitute a variety of NPC vassals, Khan colonies, and zones of Khan influence.
Heartlands
The Heartlands lie on the coast of the Central Sea, with the Earth Kingdom to its western border and Andorra to the east. It is primarily desert yet has ample supplies of seawater along its coastline. This has been used to establish irrigation networks that render the land productive, enabling the growth of plants such as trees, sugarcane, cacti, and crops. The capital is also on an island which can be forded, providing a uniquely strong defensive position against potential cavalry-based rebellions while not rendering it totally cut off.
Grazing Lands
Significantly larger and far more diverse, the Grazing Lands are the sum of the conquests and diplomatic actions of the Khans. Stretching from the Central Sea to the Northern Lake, it is bounded by the Northern Canal and Andorra to the East, the Earth Kingdom and river systems to the west and north. Most of this territory is sparsely populated, but there are settlements. The landscape is primarily desert, but also contains rivers, plains, and savannah.
Due to their sheer size, the Grazing Lands are not rigorously administrated. Instead, vassalage arrangements organise the territory, as settlements pay tribute to the Khans of the Heartland for their protection against foreign incursion. Due to the lack of a notion of firm territory or sovereignty to be defended, this means that foreign incursions are not an intolerable intrusion but rather to be debated case-by-case. For example, the Earth Kingdom Railway has been constructed in this territory with no incident.
Government and politics
The Khan peoples and their vassals are led by the Great Khan. The current Great Khan is D1dly, although an NPC called Temaj has once jostled for the position. D1dly is also the founder of the Khanate.
The Khanate's policy towards its vassal populations is primarily extractive. Subjects must provide a certain quantity of goods in either metals, slaves, or food to the Heartlands in exchange for its protection from outside incursion. The Brothers' War began when three villages in the heartlands selected two kings to break this arrangement.
Khan government is dominated by notable great families, in particular the Kero, the Mujin, and the Nasra. These families have their respective territories of influence which they use to obtain manpower and resources, and can use to influence the Great Khan's decisions.
Economy
The Khan economy is primarily extractive, using the threat of force against their sedentary vassals to obtain wealth. This has led to the Great Khan's Court, located in the Heartlands, to flourish as the de facto capital of the Khanate. With such abundant wealth, visitors and trade are common. Notable trade partners include the Air Nation via Mexico City, Andorra, and the Earth Kingdom. Trade with the Free Territory is also common, due to their shared Chiblocking roots.
Demographics
While the Heartlands are almost entirely populated by Khans, there are some exceptions in foreign traders and merchants that reside in the Great Khan's Court on a seasonal basis. In the Grazing Lands, multiple ethnicities coexist. These include Acacians, Desert Folk, Khan settlers, and Mexicans.
