This land of boundless skies is home to a wide array of peoples, geographies, and beliefs. What unites them is neither blood nor language, but commitment to the [[Way of the Many Winds]], a tradition emphasizing the importance of clarity, flexibility, and spirituality.<br />

The Air Nation is one of the oldest nations on the server, founded by then-High Wind Murpple. Beginning in Air Temple Valley, the initial model for the nation was one of a single Air Temple (the old ID on Dynmap reflected this - "Air Temple", rather than "Air Nation"). As a result, this Air Temple was sleepy, had poor development, and low population - the First Temple as it has come to be known was mostly a wooden disc on top of a mountain. While the territory did have a basic port, including the largest warship in the world, Fianna, until the inauguration of ENS Kyoshi, it was a relatively underdeveloped power.<br />

The history of the Air Nation has been intimately connected to the Fire Nation since Firelord Alweglim first proclaimed the state. At first, this was not a friendly relationship. Despite initial ambivalence towards each other, Murpple soon made a name for himself by irritating firebenders in their territory. In retribution, CCyan (future High Priest of the Church of Fire) burned down the First Temple.<br />

The destruction of the First Temple had an enormous impact on the Air Nation. The Fire Nation, previously seen as a distant neighbour, became an existential threat. Murpple began immediately recruiting new members and Air Temple Valley became a flurry of activity, as the fledgling nation was born out of a sleepy temple. The new nation abandoned its old principles of pacifism and sleepy spirituality, instead focusing on a rapid build up of resources, technology, and weaponry. The world's first airships, Defiance and Surging Gale, were built at this time by Vidcom. The threat of war eventually dissipated - Murpple and Alweglim held diplomatic talks, where the Fire Nation confessed to having zero urge for any kind of conquest and the Air Nation agreed to relax its hostile attitude to their eastern neighbour.<br />

With peace assured as relations warmed, the resources of the Valley could now be put to non-military use. Murpple created the first boundaries of the Air Nation, massively expanding its territory from the Valley, stretching to the Northern Lake. While this caused a short-lived border dispute with Mexico, the new frontier was rapidly settled. Initially, the project was to settle the mountainous islands in a large city consisting of floating cities to be called the "Sky Temple", but this project fizzled out as Ainin, the head builder, left the Air Nation to settle an Earth Kingdom. In tribute to the old spiritualistic past, the second new air temple was created in the new town of Inkwood, a short distance south of the floating city construction site. The old "Air Temple" at the Valley was renamed to Eastern Air Temple, with the new one at Inkwood to be the Western Air Temple. The first Kirov was introduced, HWS Elysium, which remains docked at Inkwood to this day.<br />

Having expanded the Air Nation immensely and seeing the frontier expand such that the Air Nation could now safely be called a world power, Murpple sought to retire. In order to end his tenure on a high note, the Constitutional Convention. This document was negotiated between Murpple, Vidcom, and Paper, as the main active members of the Nation. Upon completion, the Constitution defined a rigorous and devolved system of government for the territory that saw clear roles delegated for the military, for political leadership, for diplomacy, and for domestic affairs. Each temple was to have a Templemaster, directly appointed by nearby denizens, who would be appointed to the Council of Templemasters. This Council would then vote for one of their number to be appointed Grandmaster, responsible for the military and diplomatic affairs.<br />

Upon the ending of the Constitutional Convention, Grandmaster Murpple resigned his title to become simply the Eastern Templemaster. With a unanimous result, Western Templemaster Paper was elected as his successor. The Convention also saw the borders expand significantly, incorporating border territories from the now-extinct Mexico, the NPC village of Riversway, and other territories. This directly led to the establishment of the Southern Air Temple, led by Southern Templemaster Vidcom. The newly incorporated Mexican territory would remain dormant until the arrival of Kate, establishing an industrial base.<br />

Shortly after this, the Inkwood Conclave was summoned by Paper. This event sought to define the tendencies and beliefs that had drifted out from Air Temple Valley to the new temples. Its main holy text, Creation, was vague and appeared to either describe the creation of the world by itself; viewed more metaphorically, it can be interpreted as a meditation on the nature of the elements and their relationships. The Way was its second main text, providing ethical and personal guidance to adherents. Empyreanism also has been deemed to be highly interpretable, with each of the three main temples having different and conflicting opinions as to what the guidance of the holy texts means or should be seen to represent. While the Eastern and Western Schools have yet to publish their own works to describe their outlook, the Southern School has been summarised in Southern Templemaster Vidcom's remarks following the Inkwood Conclave. The Northern Canal was finished on the 14th of July 2021, and carried immediate concerns. The canal opened into the Central Sea and risked upsetting the balance of power in the area, as [[Andorra]] and the [[Free Territory]] had to make space for what was presumed to be soon-annexed Air Nation territory. This fear was mitigated by the establishment of the [[Northern Canal Company]], a private entity that was equally owned by all three states and run by a non-aligned chairperson. This greatly upset Kate, the leader of Mexico, who felt that the canal ought to belong to the Air Nation entirely as it was their materials and labour which had seen it completed.<br />

Shortly after the agreement was signed, Kate unilaterally annexed an island near the southern end of the canal. This was met with a chilly response from the [[Free Territory]] and [[Andorra]], both of which were soon backed up by the [[Earth Kingdom]]. The island's annexation had not been authorised by the Grandmaster, so there was still a diplomatic exit. This avenue was encouraged by Vidcom, acting as leader of the anti-war faction, while the pro-war faction argued that the island's seizure was both achievable and the ideal outcome for the canal's security by Kate. Ultimately, Paper sided with the anti-war faction and announced the island would not be seized. It is possible that the tipping point was that the Grandmaster's position as ultimate authority on foreign affairs had been encroached - Kate had acted without orders - and thus the seizure had to be ruled invalid to preserve the authority of the office. Regardless, Kate seceded immediately afterwards, declaring the independence of [[New Mexico]] and the beginning of the Air Nation civil war.<br />

The Air Nation had, at this point, successfully persuaded its allies in the [[Fire Nation]], [[Water Tribe]], and [[Cassland]] to join the conflict, which Kate had not bargained on. The terms of the [[Quadruple Alliance]] state that the signatories are called to act in the defense of any member, but are not obliged to join offensive wars. The Air Nation position was that, by seceding, Kate had initiated the war and thus the Air Nation was acting in defense, whereas Kate's position was that the secession was not inherently an act of war, and thus the Air Nation would be the aggressor by attempting to reintegrate New Mexico. The Air Nation position won out in this debate. Simultaneously, events around the island had led [[Andorra]] to join the war alongside its allies, the [[Earth Kingdom]] and [[Free Territory]] as part of its alliance, the [[Princes of Andorra]].<br />

The Air Nation is a constitutional theocratic republic divided into temples, each of whom claims authority over its surrounding territory. The residents of each templar province elect from among their pious a templemaster, who oversees temporal and spiritual matters in the region. In turn, the various templemasters elect the Grandmaster of the Air Nation from amongst themselves. The grandmaster is the supreme executive of the Air Nation, and also holds prime spiritual authority. The capital of the Air Nation is always located at the temple of the current grandmaster.<br />

The Air Nation's foreign relations have generally been characterised by excellent diplomacy, with occasional moments of tension. While it was mostly pacifist and quiet in its early days of spiritualism, Grandmaster Murpple saw the territory expand and militarise significantly.<br />

It is true that the Air Nation's early rise was in large part due to tensions with the Fire Nation. Following the burning of the First Temple, many in the Air Nation were convinced of the Fire Nation's intent to return in the future. The response from the Fire Nation varied, either being distracted by their ongoing construction projects or responding with coldness to the open plans of possible attack. While this conflict did not come to pass, other states, such as the Free Territory and Water Tribe, began to adjust their plans accordingly to what appeared to be a vendetta for the destruction of the First Temple.<br />

Ultimately, this conflict did not come to pass. With the Air Temple now burgeoning with funds and resources, expansion westwards began. In claiming the mountain island for the Floating City in the North Lake, an unintentional diplomatic dispute began with Mexico. Murpple was able to settle the affair, promising Mexican access to the coral supplies if the Mexican government agreed to recognise the new Air Nation border as legitimate. This would not be the end of Airbender-Mexican tensions, with a brief border clash by HWS Elysium. Upon the collapse of Mexico, some border territories and the former capital were annexed by the Air Nation, drawing disapproval from the Mexican successor state of Fryslan.<br />

With the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention, the Air Nation expanded its borders significantly once again, claiming unoccupied lands to its south and beginning the settling of the Southern Air Temple. This was met with hostility by other powers, albeit on a highly delayed timescale. Andorra issued a statement of concern shortly after, but the main tensions came from the Free Territory and Earth Kingdom. Despite initially pleasant relations, including the acceptance of a gift of food from the new Southern Temple to Freeport, the Territory's leadership criticised the border adjustment for the annexation of the town of Riversway. The town was seen as within the Free Territory's sphere of influence, despite the Air Nation having relocated villagers there to northern villages near the Western Temple drawing no comment. Following this tension, the Earth Kingdom issued a proclamation that their northern desert was to be neutral and any annexation of land there was to be interpreted as an act of war - a comment that could only affect either new states/colonies or the Air Nation. In his first diplomatic test, Grandmaster Paper settled the matter by pointing out that over 200 blocks of space remained between the Air Nation and Free Territory at the borders closest point, and by stating that the AN had ample amounts of land and had no interest in claiming more. This ease in tensions was confirmed by the cooperation of the Comrade-General with the Southern Templemaster in constructing a new riverway to allow rowboat traffic to connect Freeport to the Spawn Lake.<br />

The order then built a ship and sailed south, landing on an island and constructing their shrine. This shrine is believed to be both the main mine site of South Sea Saltmines LTD and the site of the book of delusions.<br />

Following the assassination of the Water Tribe's Chieftain Urist by pillagers it was noted that several of their advisers had copies of the order's work, some believe these advisers acted to aid in the continuation of the Frisian-Water Tribe conflict as well as somewhat strengthen the possession of the chieftain, this is however speculative. The order are believed to have had no role in the assassination of Urist as the order used the war to gain members in discontented regions of both nations. Fabien notes that the reformation of the order aligns with the rapid growth and expansion of South Sea Saltmines LTD. It is supposed that 3S LTD is a front through which the order are smuggling texts into nations the company trades with. <br />

The report is largely speculative at the moment, only being able to tie both parties to Thumb Yolke, however there is no evidence to suggest they are not independent entities run by Thumb. The air and fire nations are the only nations currently not in trade with 3S LTD, the former cutting off trade when a worker was supposedly spotted having completed the rite of eyes. 3S LTD and the order have always seemed hostile towards the fire nation, commenting on the church of fire as the "Grandest and most false of the stale faiths" in the book ''On the book of heretics''. No reports of any of the order's work or influence has been reported in the fire nation.<br />

The conflict found its roots in the construction of the Northern Canal, a canal that stretches for over 1500 blocks to connect the Central Sea to the Air Nation's northern lake. This was the hallmark project of Mexico City, led by Templemaster Kate. Kate had adopted the former capital of [[Mexico]], acquired by the Air Nation following that state's collapse, and turned it into one of the most heavily industrialised regions in the world. The canal directly connected to Mexico City's port and was a hallmark of the new city's prestige. Unfortunately, the canal's southern end was precariously close to the border of both Andorra and the Free Territory, who both feared an Air Nation annexation would see their "backyard" seized. To ease these concerns, the Canal Company Charter was signed. This relegated ownership of the canal to a company, overseen by a non-aligned chairman, with the company divided into three equal shares by Andorra, Free Territory, and the Air Nation. This agreement was necessary to obtain permission to finish the final stretch of the canal, but tensions remained over the sudden shift to spheres of influence.<br />

Prior to the canal, the Air Nation was relatively uninvested in the events of the Central Sea due to its lack of maritime connection. This ended with the construction of the canal as shipping had to be protected. The Air Nation would refuse to sign the [[Open Seas Treaty]], guaranteeing the passage of all ships in a variety of legal contexts, due to concerns that it would permit the canal being freely blockaded in wartime without legal recuse. Additionally, the Mexican leadership led by Kate was aggravated by the canal agreement, arguing that the canal was dug by them and thus belonged to them. The day before Mexico's seccession, the [[Northern Temple]] was founded by [[Samigot]], further destabilizing the internal balance of power in the northwestern Air Nation.<br />

Acting without orders, Kate unilaterally annexed a small island off the coast of Andorra near the canal in the name of the Air Nation. This was promptly fortified to international outcry. Andorran allies in the Earth Kingdom and Free Territory threatened war if the island were not relinquished. Furious internal debate in the Air Nation ensued between the hawks, led by Kate, arguing that it was necessary to ensure Air Nation influence over its rightful property, and the doves, led by foreign minister Vidcom, who insisted war was a destructive and futile recourse. Grandmaster Paperweight ultimately sided with the doves, prompting Mexican leadership to declare independence, beginning the Air Nation civil war.<br />

A phony war ensued at first, with only limited encounters - Samigot briefly duelled Kate over the deserts, a small skirmish in the Free Territory took place - but escalation would soon come near Andorra. Mexican leadership interpreted the Andorran security zone as a ''de facto'' annexation, thus violating the canal agreement and permitting New Mexico to leave the agreement and unilaterally claim the entire canal. Andorra responded by claiming that any foreign ship that passes through their zone will be interpreted as engaging in an act of war.<br />

Mexican pilots in Port Cass set sail in the ''Chicago'', a heavily fortified endstone ship that had sailed out as the first to cross the canal, to return to their home port. Andorran forces sent the flagship ''Andorra'' in pursuit. ''Andorra'' had to arrive from its port in Ordino and was significantly less advanced than ''Chicago'', sporting fewer torpedos and no armour. Recognising this, the Andorran navy planned to let ''Chicago'' enter the canal, destroy the island fortifications while they were under-defended, and then use ''Andorra'' to obstruct the canal. This plan was initiated successfully, but the destruction of the beacon on the island was noticed by Mexican forces, who promptly flew to the scene where a brief close-quarters battle commenced. While ''Andorra'' was far from the guns of ''Chicago'' that was now halfway up the canal, the ship's defenders were without their armour or proper weapons due to the suddenness of the operation. The Mexicans demanded the captain surrender, who responded by scuttling the ship. The wreck of ''Andorra'' still sits in its final resting place.<br />

This clash was the first serious armed engagement by Mexican forces, yet was not against the Air Nation or one of its allies. As a result, Andorra declared war and was joined by the [[Free Territory]] and the [[Earth Kingdom]]. During this time, Air Nation diplomats successfully appealed to the Quadruple Alliance that the Mexicans were aggressors by having declared secession, thus activating the terms of the treaty. New Mexico was, as a result, at war with most of the world's powers.<br />

== Diplomacy ==<br />

A lull set in once again after the Battle of the Central Sea, as the two major alliances coordinated a strategy. As part of this strategy, a diplomatic isolation effort was initiated - any neutral power that recognised New Mexican sovereignty would be treated as a co-belligerent. This effort largely backfired, sparking protest from [[Ratzores]] and [[Atlas]]. While Atlatian complaints remained just complaints, the Ratzorean assembly voted after fierce debate to recognise New Mexican sovereignty. This was promptly decried by Andorra, to whom Ratzores was an ally and thus obliged to enter into a defensive war. The Ratzorean leadership retorted by arguing Andorra had initiated the war, as the border security zone was itself meddling in the affairs of another state. Both sides appeared mutually willing to end their alliance as a result, with all Ratzoreans forced to leave AAPC territory.<br />

The coalition issued its statement demanding the end of the insurgency by July 25th 2021, without which offensive action would begin. This deadline was not met by the Mexicans, and so began the bloodiest day of the war. <br />
<br />
Military actions began in Freeport, where Earth Kingdom troops met up with [[Cassland]]ian forces. Kate flew to this area and successfully killed Earth Kingdom forces while repelling the Cassland force to flee the area. This was the first victory of the day to New Mexico.<br />
<br />
The second battle took place in [[Inkwood]], where the Air Nation had been flying [[Fire Nation]] soldiers in one-by-one. Kate intercepted this effort, and a huge battle soon took place. New Mexico's forces were heavily equipped with totems of undying, bought from Atlas shortly before secession broke out. Additionally, coalition forces had taken a "close enough" approach to armour and weaponry, reasoning that enchanted diamond was worse but similar enough in quality to enchanted netherite to achieve much the same effect. This assumption proved wrong, as Kate was able to kill the much larger joint AN-FN force and even capture the Firelord's shield. This was the second victory of the day to New Mexico.<br />

After the fires in Inkwood were put out, the initiative turned to the coalition who began an invasion of Mexico City itself. Air Nation, Fire Nation, and Free Territory forces fought together here with the Free Territory forces showing particularly impressive results - they had invested in equivalent equipment to the Mexicans, and it showed. The Free Territory would be the only party of the coalition to successfully destroy a Mexican totem. Multiple explosions and fires rocked the town with large-scale property damage. Despite this, Liz of the Free Territory's helmet broke, putting the advantage back in Mexican hands once again and seeing the town cleared once more. This was the third win of the day.<br />

Due to the unprecedented 17 players online at once, the coalitions superiority in fleets and air power was largely mitigated. This did not stop Earth Kingdom forces taking the initiative, gambling that the action in Mexico City would keep the Mexican forces distracted while they engaged in smaller operations. Using rowboats, Earth Kingdom forces successfully landed and destroyed the island fort near Andorra, seizing its beacon and ravaging its walls to the point of being useless. Kate would not know about this until the end of the day, and it would be the only coalition victory.<br />

Kate resumed the attack on Inkwood once again, having temporarily liberated Mexico City, and heavily depleted Air Nation forces struggled to mount an effective resistance, due to their fallen weapons and armour being destroyed by vengeful Mexican forces. Inkwood's Great Hall almost burned down at one stage, leading to a temporary ceasefire. This would be another victory for the Mexicans.<br />

Finally, in a last-ditch effort, the majority of the coalition rallied to invade Mexico City one last time. Air Nation, Free Territory, Andorra, Cassland, and Fire Nation participated here. While the Mexican forces handily won most encounters, they could not prevent the widespread vandalism and destruction of the city as the coalition forces fanned out. After a while, it became clear that further fighting was fruitless, and a ceasefire was called for.<br />

== Post-25th Reaction ==<br />

With the war on the battlefield, the meta-war began, as all parties involved were now fully aware of the importance of the "no war" precedent that this conflict had broken. The number of messages on the server discord was almost double compared to the day before and after these battles. Unfortunately, this led to Kate leaving the server with no return. After three weeks of no response, New Mexico was concluded to no longer exist. This is canonically hard to explain, so permit the following:<br />

While Kate had successfully led the Mexican forces to resist an invasion against a vastly larger foe, this success would not last. The defeat had been so staggering that an unconditional surrender seemed to be guaranteed. With its existential threat gone, what exactly was New Mexico to be? Monarchists in the rural outskirts intended to crown Kate as queen, establishing a rival dynasty to the Earth Kings to their south. In the navy, theocratic ideals of the Air Nation held sway as officers wished to establish a rival Empyrean state to the Inkwood Conclave. In the rank and file, many had been radicalised by socialists from abroad and the support from Ratzores, thus they began to immediately seize what ruins were left. In this chaos, what rubble was left of the city was pulverised yet further. Kate fled for her life, never to be seen again. As the socialist revolt spread out further, the naval officers invited Air Nation ships to enforce peace. Thus, New Mexican independence was snuffed out no sooner than it had began.<br />

== Legacy ==<br />

Following the end of the conflict, peace was eagerly returned to the region. The northern canal today has never been used since the war began; while it is still traversable, a new Earth Kingdom railway line has been laid on top of it. Near Andorra, the wreck of *Andorra* and the fortified island remain untouched, a brutal reminder of the horrors of war. Inkwood saw rapid repair and growth at the end of the war, and the nearby [[Floating City]] exploded with the influx of both Inkwood and Mexican refugees. Mexico City remains in Air Nation territory, but is little more than a shadow of its former glory.<br />
